SOC 2 for startups: do the smallest thing that unblocks the deal
SOC 2 for startups usually begins with one enterprise deal stuck on a security questionnaire. So the goal is not a perfect programme; it is the right report, in time, at a sensible scope.
- Readiness, not the audit
- An independent CPA firm signs
- Written estimate, no call
When SOC 2 for startups makes sense
It makes sense when buyers ask for it, not before. However, once one enterprise customer asks, others usually follow, so starting early saves time later.
Type I or Type II for a startup
Ask the customer in writing which they accept. If they take a Type I, get it, because it is faster and cheaper. But if they insist on Type II, going through Type I first mostly adds cost.
| Type I | Type II | |
|---|---|---|
| Total time | 1 to 3 months. | 6 to 12 months. |
| Watch period | None, so it is a snapshot. | Three to six months. |
| CPA fee | $5,000 to $30,000. | $10,000 to $70,000. |
Is your startup ready for SOC 2?
Tick what is true. It shows how much readiness work sits ahead.
Your result appears here as you tick, so you can see what is still open.
Keeping SOC 2 for startups small
Scope only the Security criterion unless a customer asks for more. Also scope only the production system customers use. As a result, the work stays proportionate to a small team.
- Security criterion only, unless asked otherwise
- Production environment only
- Policies written for your real team size
Why SOC 2 for startups cannot rush the watch period
Type II needs three to six months of evidence. Because that window cannot be shortened by spending more, every week you wait is a week added at the end. So the earliest useful day to start is today.
What SOC 2 for startups costs
A typical first year runs $20,000 to $65,000 all-in, including our fixed fee and the CPA firm's fee. Later years cost less. We are not a CPA firm, so the examination is always performed by a separate licensed firm. Criteria: AICPA Trust Services Criteria.
SOC 2 for startups questions
Is SOC 2 for startups too expensive?
It is a real cost, but scope controls it. Security-only, production-only scopes stay at the lower end.
Can a five-person startup get SOC 2?
Yes. Policies and controls are written for the team you actually have.
Should we buy a compliance platform first?
Not necessarily. It helps with evidence, but readiness work happens either way.
How fast can SOC 2 for startups happen?
A Type I can take one to three months, while a Type II takes six to twelve.
